Kim Vermeer

At one point, we started putting a set together of classical pieces I adapted for the two of us. Neither of us were guitar virtuosos, but we had a blast. I do wish I had a recording of the Fauré Pavane that I arranged. Some of my written music got wet in a flood at my storage unit. I scanned the remnants as best I could, but now I can only find the last three pages of the scans. We played the Fauré at my son's wedding which was gratifying, since it wasn't an easy piece. That's how I know the date of the photo.

The first piece I'm posting is What Wondrous Love, a beautiful hymn Kim was familiar with, but I was not. After she taught it to me I realized I had a recording of a string quartet playing a piece with the same melody, and I wrote an arrangement for us adding the embel-

lishment I heard in that recording.

Where to start? Kim is a very important person in my life. She fell

in love with Ireland and moved there, so I haven't seen her in a few years.

When I worked at the Florida Marine Research Institute in the late 80's through 1999, I worked with one of the marine biologists there named Greg Vermeer. As we became friends, I became a friend of the whole family, incl-

uding Kim, his wife. (Daughter Leah played special music on the piano at our wedding). Kim asked me to teach her guitar, so our friendship was always rooted in music. But we shared faith too.

I don't think Kim had a name for this tune she came up with.

She had Ireland on her mind, and it is evident in the melody. She hum-

med the tune into her phone, I think, and I went home with it. Not the phone. The tune. Now, all  I had was the tune, so I created a chord progression and created an arrangment using my Irish virtual instru-

ments on my mac. It occurs to me that Kim may have had chords to this, but I hadn't heard them. She didn't have words at this point. She wrote lyrics to this melody and named it The Valley Of Man. I think she uses the same chord progression I came up with. Anyhow, I was very excited about the piece and I surprised her with the same recording I'm posting here.
